QiO and Lloyd's Register help reduce ship fuel consumption through analytics.

Lloyd's Register was commissioned by a British ship operator to analyse fuel consumption. The operator required a software-based solution that could ingest high-frequency sensor data in real time, provide on-board analytics and bespoke visualisations, scale rapidly across the operator's fleet, and be delivered as a low-cost service.

Marine vessels are equipped with sensors that produce massive amounts of data at different frequencies and output in different formats. The data was manually retrieved in batches at the completion of the journey and analysed using legacy tools like MATLAB. Several weeks would pass to produce a report in static, PDF format. The significant lag time severely limits the ship operator's ability to optimise fuel consumption, resulting in increased cost.

QiO teamed with Lloyd's Register to build and deploy an end-to-end data ingestion, visualisation, and correlation solution in just 4 weeks. The mobile device compatible application was deployed in a secure cloud environment and provides the ship operator with drag-and-drop, dynamic dashboards and customisable charts based on real-time sensor data. More than 45 million data points across approximately 3 million rows from 50+ channels streaming in at 20kHz were ingested, standardised, augmented with external data sources, calculated and visualised.

The ship operator can now detect anomalies that drive excess fuel usage. These anomalies are mapped to historic, current and predictive insights for a single ship or across the entire fleet. The ship operator estimates a 5-8% improvement in fuel efficiency in every voyage which yields approximately $200k savings per ship, per year.
